Curving origami with mechanical frustration

We study the three-dimensional equilibrium shape of a shell formed by deployed accordion-like origami, made from an elastic sheet decorated series parallel creases crossed central longitudinal crease. Surprisingly, while imprinted crease network does not exhibit geodesic curvature, emergent folded structure stemming mechanical yields angles at vertices between sections fold, producing effective curvature. Both finite element analysis and manually origamis show robust empirical relation network’s dimensions apparent Moreover, emerging exhibits various deformations that induce three distinct morphogenesis types, bent faces to complete faceting structural buckling. characterize corresponding kinematics determine their phase diagram. Taking advantage frustration caused competition stiffness deformations, we provide novel tool for designing curved origami structures constrained strong geometrical properties.
